Twitter History Quiz

How well do you know the service that started as twttr? Ten questions per round, drawn from a pool of 40, each with a short explanation and a source.

Ten questions drawn at random from 40. Every answer has a short explanation and a source.

What the quiz covers

The questions span Twitter's whole history: the founding inside a podcasting company, the hashtag and the retweet, the move from 140 to 280 characters, the acquisitions of Vine and Periscope, verification changes, the 2022 acquisition and the rename to X in 2023. A few questions test how X counts characters today, which links nicely with the 280 Challenge.

Some questions are easy if you were on Twitter at the time and hard if you weren't. A few are obscure on purpose.

Checking your answers

After each answer, the game shows a one or two sentence explanation and a link to that question's sources. The full list, with every answer, is on the quiz answers page. For a broader overview in order, read our Twitter history timeline.

Scoring

One point per correct answer, ten per round. Your best round is saved in this browser. There is no timer, so take your time on the dates.

Tweet Test is an independent fan site. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by X Corp.

Questions

Where do the questions come from?

We wrote them ourselves and checked each fact against published sources, mostly news coverage from the time and well-referenced encyclopedia articles. The answers page lists the source for every question.

Will I get the same questions every time?

Each round picks ten questions at random and shuffles the answer order, so repeat rounds look different. With 40 in the pool, you will see repeats after a few rounds.
