How the 280 Challenge is scored

What you'll pick up

The 280 Challenge counts characters the way X does, so you learn quickly why an emoji costs two and a link always costs 23. The history quiz covers Twitter from the first "twttr" post in 2006 to the rename as X in 2023, with every answer sourced. Hashtag or not drills the rules that decide where a hashtag stops.

High scores stay in your browser. Tweet Test is a fan-made site with no connection to X Corp.

Questions

Do I need an X account to play?

No. All three games run in your browser and never connect to X. There is nothing to sign in to.

Where are my high scores kept?

In your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is sent to us. Clearing site data or using a private window resets them.

Are the quiz answers checked?

Yes. Every question has a short explanation and at least one source, listed on the answers page.

How does the 280 Challenge count characters?

The same way X does for normal posts: most Latin letters count as one, emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as two, and any link counts as 23. The guide on how X counts characters explains the details.
